Treasures from The Art Institute of Chicago
Published in Hardcover by Hudson Hills Pr (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Art Institute of Chicago, James N. Wood, Laura J. Kozitka, Catherine Steinmann, and Debra N. Mancoff
Average review score:

An outstanding addition to any art history collection
Selected by James Wood and with commentaries by Debra Mancoff, Treasures From The Art Institute Of Chicago showcases almost 450 works of art taken from The Art Institute Of Chicago. The entries are divided into cultural and chronological sections consisting of a short, informative text and fully captioned images reproduced in full color. An informative introduction summarizes The Art Institute Of Chicago's history, from its founding in 1879 to the present, tracing the changing aesthetic and intellectual criteria that determined the definition of "treasure" with respect to this museum's outstanding collection. An outstanding addition to any art appreciation or art history collection, Treasures From The Art Institute Of Chicago is especially recommended as a community library Memorial Fund acquisition.

Treasures of 19th- and 20th-Century Painting: The Art Institute of Chicago (Tiny Folios Series)
Published in Paperback by Abbeville Press, Inc. (August, 1993)
Authors: James N. Wood and Art Institute of Chicago
Average review score:

A tiny treasure you can take anywhere
The Tiny Folio series is simply wonderful! As a frequent traveler who loves to discuss (share) art, I make it a habit to bring these miniature art books with me whenever I can.

This version showcases the Art Institute's well known pieces. Included are works from John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassat, Toulouse-Latrec, Gauguin, Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, and Suerat (A Sunday on La Grande Jatte).

Okay, that's a long list, but it's just a sample of what's inside!

The book offers a delightful mix of styles, concluding with Warhol, Mondrian, Lichtenstein and Pollock.

The pictures are, of course, quite small, but the book is too! That's what makes it so lovely! It can go anywhere. And never have I seen a better representation of such a variety of artists at such an inexpensive price.

(And, this is a book you can let the smallest toddler look at! It's just right for little hands!)

TRUCKING:TRACTOR-TRAILER DRIVER HANDBK/WBK (ENGLISH)
Published in Hardcover by Delmar Learning (04 November, 1999)
Author: Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI)
Average review score:

After Driving School, I brought a copy on my truck with me.
This book gives excellent coverage of the majority of issues covered in truck driving school. I highly recommend it for people desiring to drive or even those just interested in learning. It is interesting, well layed out and very to-the-point. After completion of driving school and passing the cdl, it is still a valuable resource to keep in the truck.

Typing for Beginners

Authors: Arco Publishing and Speedwriting Institute
Average review score:

What "asdf jkl;" really means.
This classic text provides a quick method for learning to type for speed and accuracy. (I recommend it for Grades 6 and up)

It is divided into brief step-by-step lessons beginning with the home keys "a s d f j k l ;" and ending with speed and accuracy tests on full text transcriptions.

When I was in high school, I used this book to learn how to type during February school vacation. I did a three lessons a day, 30 mins each morning, afternoon, and evening. In one week, I went from 0 to 35-55 words per minute.

The result of the easy instructions and simple drill and practice lessons was a skill which has served me well ever since.

Highly recommended.

Authors: M. D. Rear Admiral Van Orden and Arleigh A. Burke

A Review of U.S. Navy Ships and Coast Guard Cutters
This book is an excellent beginner's look into ships, life aboard them, and the men and women who serve on them. It details the major types of Naval and Coast Guard vessels from Aircraft Carriers, to Auxillary Ships, and High Endurance Cutters. The author draws on 34 years in the Navy to present often puzzling nautical and technical information into an easy-to-understand format. This book is written primarily for teenagers, but everyone who reads this book will enjoy it and learn from it.

Uncle John's Biggest Ever Bathroom Reader
Published in Hardcover by Thunder Bay Press (March, 2002)
Author: Bathroom Readers' Institute
Average review score:

The most fun you can have in a bathroom
This 15th annual edition of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader is actually a combination of two previously published books: Uncle John's Great Big Bathroom Reader & Uncle John's Ultimate Bathroom Reader. This allows the Bathroom Readers' Institute (BRI) to deliver 768 pages of little known facts, pop culture tidbits, weird news items, and intriguing origins of everyday things.

Articles in the text are not arranged in any particular order so an eight page Contents section at the front of the book is a great guide to your reading pleasure. Thirty three subject categories are used to group the articles which are then subdivided by length. Short articles are one page long. Medium ones are two pages. Long articles are either three or four pages, and Extended articles can run as long as eight pages. Two articles are so long they are broken into several Long parts. One on the history of Miss America is seven parts long, and the World's Tallest Buildings has eight parts.

Some of the articles in the book are brainteasers, puzzles, or quizzes. The answers to these are grouped together on the last eleven pages of the book.

There is a footnote on each page that contains an interesting fact. E.g.: On page 347 we are told that the shortest performance to win an Oscar was Anthony Quinn's 8 minutes as Gauguin in the movie Lust For Life. Every U.S. president with a beard was a Republican is on page 399. On page 605 the note states that King Louis XV bathed just three time sin his entire life.

The BRI claims to gather the most interesting and little-known facts from many sources and they encourage readers to suggest additions to future volumes. Perfect for the bathroom, this book would also go well on a nightstand, but is too heavy for your backpack. A joy to read.

Understanding Crime Prevention
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann (28 February, 2001)
Authors: National Crime Prevention Institute Staf and Ncpi
Average review score:

Great Beginners Guide to Crime Prevention
This is a highly useful book about crime prevention methodology. The material is current, factual, timely and clearly readable. Well documented with graphs and tables. The only real problem I found was in Chapter 3 there is a reference to "Associations" listed in Chapter 11. They aren't there. Otherwise a useful book and well worth the cover price. I strongly recommend this book for Facilities managers, loss/crime prevention specialists, security professionals of all types and everyone interested in safer communities.
